More about the history of Dubai Island

Dubai Islands, formerly known as Deira Islands, are part of a visionary development strategy to cement Dubai’s reputation as a global metropolis. The project dates back to plans from the early 2000s, when the city began to artificially expand its coastal area with spectacular buildings such as the Palm Islands. The project was originally announced under the name „Palm Deira“, in reference to the already famous Palm Jumeirah and Palm Jebel Ali. However, due to adjustments in design and market conditions, the plans were revised several times until the new name „Deira Islands“ was finally created, with the aim of adding a modern waterfront community to Dubai’s historic Deira commercial district that would attract tourists and business people alike. This included the construction of luxury hotels, residential areas and leisure facilities as well as the expansion of important infrastructure in this part of the city. Over the years, the plans were repeatedly adapted to meet changing economic and cultural requirements. More recently, the area has been further developed under the brand name „Dubai Islands“ to focus on the cosmopolitan and forward-looking image of the city. Dubai Islands thus symbolises Dubai’s continuous change and its unbroken innovative strength.
